- First, make sure the student is safe. If someone is having a seizure and in danger of falling out of a chair or hurting themselves – ease them to the floor and clear anything potentially dangerous from the area. If they are feeling faint – have them sit down and stay right where they are or if they have fainted – have them stay on the ground either laying down or if they are insistent on sitting, up make sure they are supported in some way (so as to not fall over again potentially injuring themselves further).
- Second, call the health office – white phone #163 and black phone #3350 – tell us what the emergency is and the student’s name (this would be a good time to find your white phone and make sure it is working!) You may also use the call button in your room to access the front office and they can radio or call us. If you don’t have access to a phone or a button, please send someone to the health office to request help. I recognize this is a very large building and when you are in the middle of an emergency it feels like FOREVER before we arrive – I promise someone will come!
- If it is during school hours, there is always a minimum of 1 nurse in the building – please do not call 911. It is best practice to call the nurse to the scene to assess the student and the situation and we will make the determination if 911 needs to be called or not.
- If we call 911 – the call is made from the health office and our “process” is initiated:
- Call made to 911 – calling 911 from a black phone activates automated calls to the district office and the district nursing coordinator notifying them someone has called 911 from our building – district office will call our front office to assess the need for further assistance.
- The health office announces on the radio 911 has been called – officer Gartner, an administrator, a dean and any deans assistant in the area respond to the health office for assistance with the emergency and student flow.
- Once EMS arrives – typically at door #16 – they are in charge of the situation and the student is usually transported.
- If you have been involved in an emergency and you would like to debrief after the event – please feel free to come to the health office and speak with one of us. We will happily review with you what happened and answer any questions you may have.
As always, please feel free to contact the health office if you have any questions or concerns. We have a great staff and we want you all to know we truly appreciate everything you do for the students.
